The Office of Community Service (OCS) supports the active involvement of students, faculty, and staff in community service activities. This office organizes campuswide service days, including the United Way Day of Caring in September,the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service project in January in addition to the Cesar Chvez Day of Service held in March . The OCS is growing their Alternative Break Program including 5 trips in the spring and 1 trip each fall to cities all across the country focused on a variety of different social issues such as the environment, poverty and hunger and homelessness. The OCS also coordinates a fall Volunteer Fair where community agencies come to campus to recruit volunteers. OCS maintains an updated list of volunteer opportunities with community agencies and hosts a spring recognition event for all campus volunteers. In addition, the staff works with student groups, staff and faculty interested in one-time service projects and helps students seeking mini-grants to support specific service projects,
The OCS coordinates the 5 of the Sam Jones Community Service Scholarship Programs to recognize incoming and continuing students for their outstanding involvement in community/campus service and academic achievement. Freshman Service Scholars ($3,000) and Community Service Scholars ($3,500) enroll in a service learning class, volunteer in the community, participate in campuswide service activities, and become leaders who engage other students in community service.
