Bachelor of Arts in New Media, Art, & Technology

The Bachelor of Arts in New Media, Art, & Technology (NMAT) combines tradition and innovation in a four-year, undergraduate degree for students wishing to develop practical skills and strong knowledge in areas including, but not limited to, digital media, web/mobile media, 2D & 3D studio art & design, virtual media, and emerging media. Students will learn strong computer, art, and design skills, preparing them for a variety of careers and graduate studies. Taking a core set of courses in New Media, Art, & Technology and selecting one of four areas to concentration areas, students additionally choose electives to tailor the degree to their interests and plans. The 21st-century curriculum offers skills, knowledge and in-service learning, providing valuable pathways to many occupations, including graphic design, illustration, publishing, commercial art, fine art, web design and development, videography, cinematography and photography.

The major consists of 36 credit hours of courses in New Media, Art, & Technology, divided between a required core and courses within a chosen concentration, including electives. At IU Kokomo, the Bachelor of Arts Degree in New Media, Art, & Technology features an innovative multidisciplinary approach, with coursework taught by faculty from a variety of fields. Students are encouraged to tailor their coursework to focus on their interests and goals.

Mission

New Media, Art, & Technology is a program that prepares students to be critical, adaptive, inquisitive, effective, and creative thinkers, communicators, problem-solvers and creators, able to succeed as relevant professionals in a multitude of established and emerging fields.

Goals

Students who complete the program will:

  • understand how to produce industry-standard media works within their chosen concentration
  • have the practical and theoretical knowledge to critique works within their chosen concentration
  • posses the verbal, historical and theoretical knowledge to present their work to a variety of audiences
  • understand the professional practices required to succeed in their chosen area
  • produce a portfolio of their work suitable for advancement within their chosen field

2a. All New Media, Art, & Technology NMAT-D, NMAT-W, NMAT-S (digital, web, studio art) courses require a C grade or higher to count toward the major.

2b. All New Media, Art, & Technology NMAT-H, FINA-A and NMAT-G (history, theory, and general) courses require a C- grade or higher to count toward the major.

3. New Media, Art, & Technology Core Required: All students earning a Bachelor of Arts in New Media, Art, & Technology must take:

  • NMAT-W201 Introduction to New Media (previously NMCM-N 201) (3 cr.)

Digital Media Concentration 

Required: All students earning a Digital Media concentration must take:

  • NMAT-S100 Fundamental Studio-Drawing (previously FINA-F100) (3 cr.)
  • NMAT-G411 New Media Theory (previously NMCM-N 411) (3 cr.)

Concentration electives: Students must also take their choice of 4 of the following courses:

  • NMAT-D316 Studio In Digital Media II (previously NMCM-N330) (3 cr.)
  • NMAT-D326 Digital Illustration I (previously NMCM-N312) (3 cr.)
  • NMAT-G405 Concepts and Images (previously FINA-U 405) (3 cr.)
  • NMAT-D426 Advanced Digital Illustration (previously NMCM-N412) (3 cr.)
  • NMAT-D416 Advanced Digital Media Studio (previously NMCM-N408/FINA-S408) (3 cr.)

Students take 6 additional credit hours of New Media, Art, & Technology Electives (Any courses from NMAT-D, NMAT-G, NMAT-H, FINA-A, NMAT-S, NMAT-W).

Graphic Design Concentration 

Required: All students earning a Graphic Design concentration must take:

  • NMAT-S100 Fundamental Studio-Drawing (previously FINA-F100) (3 cr.)
  • NMAT-D217 Typography I (previously NMCM-N211) (3 cr.)
  • NMAT-G411 New Media Theory (previously NMCM-N 411) (3 cr.)
  • NMAT-D257 Graphic Design I (previously NMCM-N250) (3 cr.)

Concentration electives: Students must also take their choice of 3 of the following courses:

  • NMAT-H258 History Of Graphic Design (previously NMCM-N255) (3 cr.)
  • NMAT-D326 Digital Illustration I (previously NMCM-N312) (3 cr.)

Students take 3 additional credit hours of New Media, Art, & Technology Electives (Any courses from NMAT-D, NMAT-G, NMAT-H, FINA-A, NMAT-S, NMAT-W).

Studio Art Concentration

Required: All students earning a Studio Art concentration must take:

  • NMAT-S100 Fundamental Studio-Drawing (previously FINA-F100)
  • NMAT-S112 Fundamental Studio-3D (previously FINA-F101)
  • NMAT-S322 Exploration of Materials and Process (previously FINA-U301)

Required: All students earning a Studio Art concentration must take 6 credit hours of Art History/Philosophy of Art:

  • FINA-A101 Ancient to Medieval Art or FINA-A102 Renaissance to Modern Art
  • select one other NMAT-H or FINA-A course

Required: All students earning a Studio Art concentration must take an additional 9 credit hours in any NMAT courses, including at least one 400-level NMAT-S course.

Web Design Concentration 

Required: All students earning a Web Design concentration must take NMAT-G411 New Media Theory (previously NMCM-N 411) (3 cr.).

Concentration electives: Students must also take their choice of 4 of the following courses:
