Application

The Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington exclusively accepts applications for admission to graduate degree programs through the Schools of Public Health Application Service (SOPHAS) at sophas.org. The application for fall 2023 admission will be available through the SOPHAS portal on August 15, 2022. It is important to thoroughly read and complete all sections (four quadrants) in the SOPHAS application. If you have questions during the SOPHAS application, you may contact sophasinfo@liaisoncas.com.

In addition to completion and submission of the SOPHAS application, all applicants must also complete and submit the Indiana University Bloomington Online Graduate and Professional Admissions Application at graduate.indiana.edu/admissions/apply.html. This supplemental application is managed by the same company who manages the SOPHAS application. It will look very similar to the SOPHAS application. Please be sure to complete all sections. You will not be required to upload any documents to this application but doing so is still allowed. This secondary application will not cost applicants any additional fees (SPH covers the cost of these fees on the applicant’s behalf). This duplication of application information is required for admission.

For students wishing to apply to any of our Graduate Certificate programs (Public Health-Bloomington Non-degree), applicants will need to complete the SOPHAS Express application at https://sophasexpress.liaisoncas.com/applicant-ux/#/login.

Deadlines

• Spring 2023 Admission: Admission for the spring semester is possible for all School of Public Health-Bloomington graduate programs with exception of the following: All M.P.H. degree programs, and the M.S. in Athletic Training degree program. The following Ph.D. programs do not admit for spring terms: Biostatistics; Epidemiology; Environmental and Occupational Health; Health Behavior; Human Performance, Exercise Physiology; Human Performance Biomechanics. Applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible. October 15, 2022 is the priority application deadline for spring semester admission. The application closes on November 15, 2022.
• Summer 2023 Admission: Admission for the summer term is possible for all School of Public Health- Bloomington graduate programs except M.P.H. and Ph.D. programs. January 15, 2023 is the deadline to apply for summer 2023.
• Fall 2023 Admission: Admission for the fall semester is possible for all School of Public Health-Bloomington graduate programs with exception of the following: M.S. in Athletic Training degree program (admits for summer only). International students should also submit a completed application by February 1, 2023 to allow for additional processing time for international transcripts as well as the time needed to complete immigration processes. The application portal will close on April 1, 2023 for fall admissions with the exception of the M.P.H. degree program. That deadline is April 15, 2023. Applications completed by this date will receive full consideration for admission.

Required Materials

All applicants must complete the School of Public Health Application Service (SOPHAS) application at www.sophas.org. 

Other Requirements:

A statement of purpose (600 word maximum) Students should upload a pdf or Word doc of their statement of purpose to their SOPHAS application. The statement of purpose should include:

• reasons or interest in the program you are applying to.
• research/professional interests.
• career goals.
• reason(s) for interest in Indiana University.

Official U.S./Domestic transcripts from all post-secondary institutions must be sent from each institution’s registrar directly to SOPHAS. Official transcripts are required from all previously attended colleges and universities (including AP credit taken in high school and transferred to a college or university). Photocopies of official transcripts or unofficial records will not be accepted. You can print an Official Transcript Request Form(s) from your online SOPHAS application and have your school’s registrar forward official transcripts to SOPHAS. SOPHAS only accepts electronic transcripts from Credentials Solutions, Parchment, and National Student Clearinghouse. If your school does not offer any of these services, your transcript must be sent by mail to the address listed below:

Students who have completed coursework and degrees from Indiana University are still required to submit official transcripts to SOPHAS.

International Transcripts

All non-U.S. transcripts must be evaluated by World Education Service (WES) using their ICAP Course-by-course evaluation service. For further instructions, visit http://www.wes.org/sophas. Non-U.S. transcripts are evaluated exclusively through WES. Please add your SOPHAS ID on your WES evaluation request form so that your evaluation electronically matches your application. Please note that we do not accept other evaluation services other than WES services, nor do we waive this requirement regardless of prior degrees obtained.

In addition to submitting your official transcripts to WES, all international applicants are required to submit an additional set of all official transcripts (with English translation) and a photocopy of their diploma(s) at the time of their application to the Office of International Services. International students who have completed all their coursework/earned a degree in the U.S., should also submit official copies of those transcripts/photocopy of their diploma(s) to the Office of International Services. They process the I-20 form needed to process student Visa and SEVIS forms.

Three Letters of Recommendation - (SOPHAS refers to them as Evaluators) from those who are best able to assess your ability to be successful in a graduate degree program. Ideally, your recommenders are recent professors, researchers or employers in a related field.

GRE Scores are optional for all IU School of Public Health-Bloomington graduate degree programs with the following exceptions:

• Applicants for the M.S. or Ph.D. in Nutrition Science.
• Applicants (who are U.S. citizens with a minimum GPA of 2.8) for the M.S. in Health Promotion or School and College Health MS Safety Management.

Please have Educational Testing Services (ETS) send official GRE scores to the IU School of Public Health-Bloomington institution code: 6979.

English Proficiency Exam

All international applicants are required to submit official language proficiency test scores. We accept a minimum TOEFL score of 80, or a minimum IELTS score of 7. We do not accept Duolingo or any other language testing service. Please have Educational Testing Services (ETS) send official scores to the institution code: 5688.

Note: We will not process any application with TOEFL or IELTS scores below these minimum scores.

Exemptions:

1. You have completed a degree in the United States (last 2–5 years) at time of application submission.
2. You are an applicant whose citizenship is from one of the recognized English-Speaking countries listed at publichealth.indiana.edu/masters/apply/index.html (master's) or publichealth.indiana.edu/doctoral/apply/index.html  (doctoral).

Please note that although applicants may be exempt from the language requirement for admission, a language exam score may be required to comply with potential funding opportunities.

A Curriculum Vitae or Resume 

Important Notes:

• All application requirements must be received by IU SPH before an application will be assigned to a committee for review.
• Please note that the typical timeline for an application to be fully reviewed by the admissions committee takes approximately 6–8 weeks. SOPHAS will collect the required application materials and will conduct the initial application review to ensure that all materials have been received. Applications will initially reside with SOPHAS for the first 7–21 days. International applications can take longer due to the collection of international coursework through World Education Services (WES). Their review process can take up to 3 weeks. The SPH Admissions office will not begin to formally review an application until the application has been “verified” by SOPHAS. Students should log into their SOPHAS account frequently to monitor the status of their application and to ensure that there are no messages from SOPHAS about missing documents/materials.
