Degrees Offered
Master of Arts, Master of Arts for Teachers, dual Master of Arts and Master of Library Science (jointly with the School of Library and Information Science), and Doctor of Philosophy. In addition, the School of Music offers the Master of Music, the Master of Science in Music, the Master of Music Education, the combined Master of Music and Master of Library Science (jointly with the School of Library and Information Science), Specialist in Music Education, Certificate in Organ and Church Music, the Doctor of Music, and the Doctor of Music Education degrees. The University Graduate School also offers the Master of Arts in arts administration degree (described elsewhere in this bulletin). Special School Requirements

(See also general University Graduate School requirements.)

Admission
To work for a degree in music through the University Graduate School, a student must first be admitted to the School of Music; after satisfactorily completing one semester of course work, the student may apply for admission to the University Graduate School. The Graduate Record Examination General Test and the Subject Test in music are required for admission. Entrance proficiency examinations are also required; for details see the Graduate Division section of the School of Music Bulletin.

Students must meet the general requirements of the University Graduate School and the specific requirements of the School of Music outlined in its bulletin.

Grades
Current and cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 (B).

Master of Arts Degree

Majors are available in music theory and musicology.

Admission
Undergraduate major in music or demonstration of undergraduate equivalency in music. Also see major-specific requirements described in the School of Music Bulletin.

Major-Field Requirements
For music theory majors, twenty (20) credit hours including T531, T550, T551, T555, T556, T557, T558, and T591. For musicology majors, eighteen (18) hours including M551; 9 credit hours selected from M598, M691, M692, M693, M694, M695, M696, and M698; 6 credit hours of electives from courses or seminars in musicology or music theory approved by the student’s academic advisor.

History and Literature Courses
Six (6) credit hours selected from M525 Survey of Operatic Literature (3 cr.), M527 Symphonic Literature (3 cr.), M528, M651 Medieval Music (3 cr.), M652 Renaissance Music (3 cr.), M653 Music of the Baroque Period (3 cr.), M654 Classic Music (3 cr.), M655 Romantic Music (3 cr.), M656 Twentieth-Century Music (3 cr.); OR 3 credit hours selected from the list above and 3 credit hours selected from M502 Composers: Variable Title (3 cr.) or M510 Topics in Music Literature (3 cr.).

Cognate
Six (6) credit hours in a field inside or outside of music in which the student has sufficient background to do graduate-level work. Music theory majors must take the cognate in a field outside of music.

Tool-Subject Requirement
Proficiency in music bibliography, as demonstrated by examination or by passing M539 with a grade of B or higher.

Foreign Language Requirement
Musicology majors must demonstrate reading proficiency in French, German, Italian, Latin, or Russian (language choice as approved by the student’s academic advisor). Students satisfy the requirement by passing a reading examination prepared by members of the musicology faculty. The examination includes one historical text, to which the student responds by answering questions on its content, and one modern musicological text, which the student translates. Each text is approximately 400 words. The examination lasts three hours; a dictionary may be used.

Required each semester of enrollment.

Master of Arts for Teachers

Major-Field Requirements Thirty-two (32) credit hours, distributed as follows:

  1. music education: E518, E545, and one or two courses selected from Education M337 and/or M338.
  2. professional education: one course selected from Education H520, Education H530, or Education H540; one course selected from Education P510 or Education P516; Education M580; one course selected from Education M464, Education L514, or Education L517; Education M300; Education M474; Education W200.
Music Techniques
Credit hours, as needed to meet the requirements of the area in which the student expects to be certified.

General-Education Courses
Credit hours, as needed to meet the certification requirements of the state in which the student expects to teach. These are normally undergraduate courses and do not count toward the total credit hours required for the M.A.T. degree.

Dual Master of Arts and Master of Library Science Degrees

This program permits the student to coordinate a Master of Arts degree in music theory or musicology with a Master of Library Science degree.

Admission Requirement
In addition to the general requirements, the student must apply for admission to the School of Music (and, after one semester, to the University Graduate School) as well as to the School of Library and Information Science and must meet admission criteria established by each.

Requirements
The student must satisfy the requirements for a Master of Arts degree in music theory or in musicology and for a Master of Library Science degree, L503, L505, L507, L520, L524, L528, L596, L631, Music M539, and 3 credit hours of electives in SLIS for a total of 30 credit hours in SLIS.

Doctor of Philosophy Degree

Majors are available in music education, music theory, and musicology.

Admission
Master’s degree, or its equivalent, normally with a major in the same area. Also see major-specific requirements described in the School of Music Bulletin.

Major-Field Requirements
For music education majors, E519, E530, E616, E618, E635, E658, E659, E660 or E661, E662; dissertation (12 hours). For music theory majors, T623, T624, T655, T656, T658, T659; 9 credit hours in a track or concentration chosen from history of music theory, structure of music, or pedagogy of music; dissertation (12 credit hours). For musicology majors, M661, M662; 9 credit hours from M598, M691, M692, M693, M694, M695, and M698; 6 credit hours of approved electives in musicology or music theory; dissertation (15-36 hours).

Minors
Music education and musicology require at least one minor, which may be inside or outside of music. Musicology majors may use courses taken for the M.A. cognate in partial fulfillment of a Ph.D. minor, subject to approval from the department involved. Music theory requires two minors, the first of which must be music history and literature or musicology, the second of which may be inside or outside of music.

Tool-Subject Requirement
For music education majors, E531 and E532 with a grade of C or evidence of proficiency in these courses as demonstrated by examination. For music theory and musicology majors, proficiency in music bibliography, as demonstrated by examination or by passing M539 with a grade of B or higher.

Foreign Language Requirement
Reading proficiency in two foreign languages. Music education and music theory majors may substitute a research skill for the second language. Musicology majors may count as one of the two languages the language required for the M.A. degree. See the heading “Foreign language requirement” under the M.A. degree for more information about the musicology language examination.

Ph.D. Minors for Students Outside the School of Music
Minors in music for doctoral students outside the School of Music may be taken within one of the established departments of the School of Music. No general entrance examinations are required, but the director of graduate studies may require entering proficiency examinations. Acceptance as a minor, prerequisites, and minimum requirements are established by the director of graduate studies. No transfer credits will be accepted toward a music minor.
