Interdepartmental Major in English and African American and African Diaspora Studies
Requirements

Students must complete at least 40 credit hours in English and African American and African Diaspora Studies, including the CASE Credit Hour and Residency Requirements and the following:

  1. English Courses. At least 18 credit hours at the 200 level or above, of which at least 12 credit hours must be at the 300 level or above, including:
    1. ENG-L 260 Introduction to Advanced Study of Literature
    2. One introductory genre course approved for CASE Intensive Writing credit, chosen from the following:
      • ENG-L 203 Introduction to Drama
      • ENG-L 204 Introduction to Fiction
      • ENG-L 205 Introduction to Poetry
      • ENG-L 206 Introduction to Prose
    3. Three literary history courses, recommended within the first 21 credit hours of the major:
      • ENG-L 310 Literary History 1: Beginnings through the Seventeenth Century
      • ENG-L 312 Literary History 2: Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries
      • ENG-L 316 Literary History 3: Twentieth and Twenty-first Centuries
    4. ENG-L 371 Critical Practices
  2. African American and African Diaspora Studies Courses. At least 18 credit hours, of which at least 12 credit hours must be at the 300 level or above, including:
    1. AAAD-A 150 Survey of the Culture of Black Americans
    2. AAAD-A 355 African American History I or A356 African American History II
    3. AAAD-A 379 Early Black American Writing or A380 Contemporary Black American Writing
    4. Three courses from the following:
      • AAAD-A 249 African American Autobiography
      • AAAD-A 283 Blacks in American Drama and Theatre 1767-1945
      • AAAD-A 384 Blacks in American Drama and Theatre 1945-Present
      • AAAD-A 479 Contemporary Black Poetry
      • AAAD-A 480 The Black Novel
      • AAAD-A 493 Senior Seminar in African American Studies

Students must also complete the B.A. degree requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences.
