J 501 Evolution of Criminological Thought and Policy (3 cr.) This course provides an intensive introduction to the theoretical literature on crime and delinquency. Its purpose is to develop students' ability to critically evaluate and compare theories of crime as they apply to public policy and the criminal justice system.
J 502 Research Methods in Criminal Justice and Public Affairs (3 cr.) E 546 Stream Ecology (3 cr.) P: SPEA E455. Advanced limnology course that explores patterns and processes characterizing stream ecosystems. Takes a holistic approach that includes: physical, chemical and biological stream characteristics; watershed patterns; and stream processes (trophic dynamics, colonization and dispersal, community dynamics, and responses to change). E 554 Groundwater Flow Modeling (3 cr.) Fundamentals of groundwater flow modeling demonstrated through exercises in one-dimensional and radial flow. Class meetings will focus on progress reports by each participant and the critique and revision of draft papers. Students will present revised research papers to the faculty and students of the school in a series of research colloquia.

We will analyze the development and impact of policies at the federal, state, and local levels, and will examine the cultural policies of other countries as well. Topics include the history of American cultural policymaking, leadership and advocacy, controversies surrounding public support of the arts, the roles of the nonprofit and for-profit sectors and of individual artists, arts education, community development, censorship and equity. In these contexts, we will also discuss artistic vision and its role in policymaking.
